The members and trainees of the MRRC meet near the beginning of each academic year for a 2 ½ day research retreat in an off-campus setting. These retreats consist of a series of sessions and workshops conducted primarily by the trainees and younger scientists in the MRRC.    The retreats are of significant importance in initiating dialogues and collaborative projects among research programs.  They have also served to identify "who to ask" concerning questions of research methodology or details of symptomatic manifestations of different disease entities. These events have been exceedingly useful in encouraging collegiality and esprit de corps among trainees and faculty, in fitting together an overall view of the spectrum of research occurring in the MRRC, and in offering a forum at which a number of trainees can present their work to an interested audience.

The Conference Center at Lake Arrowhead is in a wooded area located in the mountains east of Los Angeles, away from the smog and traffic of the city. Ample time is set aside from the presentations for socializing and getting to know fellow MRRC members, for hiking in the mountains or breaking bones in misguided athletic endeavors.

The entire conference center has undergone extensive upgrades over the years and now features very pleasant rooms with private baths.  Attendees usually consider the meals prepared by the dining room as one of the attractions of the meetings.
